Cheb Bilal: The French dream

“The enlightened rai” is how the daily Humanity presents the music of Cheb Bilal. With multiple influences, his songs touch the Arab community on both sides of the Mediterranean. They address in depth the problems and sufferings of those who want to leave and those who live in exile. Cheb Bilal thus draws his inspiration from his story: an undocumented immigrant who becomes a star of raï.

Ce morceau porte l’ambiance douce du Chaabi.Rai muziek. Cependant, il n’y een pas grand-chose à faire gaga sur cette.

He arrived in Marseille in 1989, “the turning point of his career” in his words. Undocumented, he works in a small bar and lives with the fear of being expelled from the country by the police. It is in the Phocaean city that he writes his texts and becomes a raï singer.

From cabaret to cabaret, from bar to bar, he ended up being noticed by the Algerian community. He then begins to fill small venues and goes as far as opening the Cheb Hasni concert.

Babor Li Jebni.

In 1997, he released his first album Babor Li Jebni, which translates to Cursed be the boat that brought me. The success is there, especially in Algeria, and in particular thanks to the songs Ghorba and L’hem, so well they tell so well the difficulties of exile and loneliness. Word of mouth helps him gain media attention.

2002 marks the official entry of Cheb Bilal as a great singer of raï thanks to his album Sidi Sidi, a mixture of influences, which marries traditional music with violins, congas or brass. The following year, he scored with his third album Fakou and then participated in a jazz record, Les enfants de Marguerite-Marie.

Even if he sings in French Cheb Bilal prefers his mother tongue, Arabic, to express himself in music. Its raï integrates many influences without betraying its profoundly Maghrebian identity. So he introduced accordion, jazz piano, and even drums sounds into his music.

Despite his success, Cheb Bilal has not forgotten that he was once Bilal Mouffok, an underground artist who dreams of a better future. This is why he takes part in shows in support of undocumented migrants, including that of Bercy at the end of 2010, alongside some twenty artists including Cali or 113.
